Grease is the Word: Innovative Tips for Disposing of Kitchen Grease
As the holiday season approaches, kitchens will buzz with the activities of festive cooking, leading to an inevitable byproduct - kitchen grease. While it's easy to pour kitchen grease down the drain, such habits can wreak havoc on your plumbing and the environment. But don't fret! There are effective and responsible ways to dispose of kitchen grease, and the City of Arlington is leading the charge with its innovative grease recycle program.
Why Proper Grease Disposal Matters
When grease is washed down the sink, it may seem harmless at first. However, as it cools, it solidifies, leading to clogged pipes and potentially costly plumbing issues. Moreover, it can contribute to larger environmental problems, such as sewer overflows and water pollution.
I happen to know about this firsthand. In 2005, just 3 months after moving into our new home, we experienced what we first thought was a simple plumbing issue when our downstairs toilet overflowed. Before long, we realized our problem was much larger. Sewage flowed up and over our tub and eventually flooded most of our first story floor. Outside, we saw sewage running down the driveways of several of our neighbors' homes as well. The culprit was a city sewer line that had become clogged with kitchen grease!
Arlington’s Grease Recycle Program: A Community Solution
In a commendable effort to combat these issues, the City of Arlington has launched the 2023 Holiday Grease Roundup. This program, now in its tenth year, runs from November 13, 2023, through January 12, 2024. It's a joint effort between the Wastewater and Treatment Education Roundtable, North Central Texas Council of Governments, and other area cities.
Residents are encouraged to bring their used cooking oil and grease to designated drop-off points:
- Cravens Park, 400 Cravens Park Drive, 76018 (5 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week)
- Dottie Lynn Recreation, 3200 Norwood Lane, 76013 (5 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week)
American BioSource provides receptacles for collecting the grease, which is then recycled into biodiesel fuel or biogas. This not only prevents grease from clogging pipes but also contributes to creating clean, green fuel, reducing landfill waste.
For residents with more than five gallons of used cooking oil, Arlington Water Utilities offers a pickup service during the event. Just call 817-459-5902. Remember, this collection is strictly for cooking oil and grease - no motor oil or automotive fluids.
Simple Steps for Everyday Grease Disposal
- Cool It Down: Let grease cool and solidify in the pan.
- Scrape It Off: Use a spatula or scraper to remove the solidified grease from cookware.
- Soak It Up: If the grease is in liquid form, pour it into a container filled with absorbent materials like cat litter or coffee grounds.
- Seal and Toss: Once absorbed, seal the container and dispose of it in the trash.
- Wipe Before Washing: Use a paper towel to wipe greasy pots and pans before washing them.
The Bigger Picture: Protecting Our Planet
By adopting these practices and supporting programs like Arlington's Grease Roundup, we play a crucial role in safeguarding our homes and the environment from the perils of improper grease disposal. It's a simple yet powerful way to make a difference.
